Why are proteins biologically important molecules?

They play several roles in living things and carry out many functions in the body including: growth and repair, signaling from one cell to another, defense against invaders, and catalyzing chemical reactions (remember, enzymes are proteins). Your body could not function without proteins.

Describe the general structure of amino acids.

All amino acids have an R groups that is attached to the central carbon; this is what makes one amino acid different than the other. They also have an amine group (NH2 which becomes NH3+) and a carboxyl group (COOH) at the other end. The different properties result from variations in the structures of different R groups. The R group is often referred to as the amino acid side chain.
