A man has a tumor on the lower half of his right kidney. Is it possible to remove the tumor and the affected inferior portion but leave the  posterior portion? Would it still be functional?

My professor said partial kidney removal is possible but not likely because they are so vascularized and spreads the invaders easily. When disease or a growth invade the kidney the entire kidney is removed for this reason, and also because there is no good way to close the section that would then be exposed by its removal. However, if a growth is adhering to the superficial boundaries of the kidney it might possible to remove it without causing damage to the kidney or having to remove the kidney complete. Still, since we have two kidneys doctor's opt for kidney removal because it is the safest (and probably easiest) way to get rid of the disease or growth.
