A soccer player kicks the ball toward a goal that is 28.0 m in front of him. The ball leaves his foot at a speed of 19.1 m/s and an angle of 33.2° above the ground. Find the speed of the ball when the goalie catches it in front of the net. (Note: The answer is not 19.1 m/s.)

Hi there

horizontal component of velocity Vx= Vcos(tehta) = 19.1*cos33.2 = 15.98 m/s 17.616 m/s

vertical component of vwelocity = Vy = Vsin(tehta) = 19.1*sin33.2 = 10.45 m/s

time of flight

t = D/Vx = 28/15.98 = 1.752 s

The final y velocity is

Vyf = Vy + g*t

Vfy = 10.45 - 9.8*1.752 = -6.71 m/s

V = sqrt(Vx^2+Vyf^2)

V = sqrt(15.98^2+ (-6.71)^2)

V = 17.33 m/s

NOTE: I did not consider significant digits. I hope this helps Slight Smile
