I understand the general process of "cutting" and "pasting" the desired gene into bacteria DNA. But then what happens after that? Does the bacteria make copies of the DNA. Does it actually produce the protein? Is the bacteria injected directly into the patient needing the protein?

The bacteria are usually cultured on a large scale and the protein produced by them from the inserted DNA is isolated and purified.

The bacteria will certainly make copies of the DNA containing the foreign gene. IF the cutting and pasting of the desired gene was done correctly, the bacteria will also produce the protein. The protein can be purified from them and given to patients. The bacteria are never directly injected into the patient.
