Figure below shows a three-stage separation process. The ratio of P3/D3 is 3 the ratio of P2/D2 is 1, and the ratio of A to B in stream P2 is 4 to 1. Calculate the composition and percent of each component in stream E.

Given P3/ D3 = 3 and P2/D2 = 1

mass balance:

total: 100 = D1 +D2+ D3 + P3
           100 = D1 +D2+ 10 + 30

C: 100(0.3) = 0.27D1 + 0.73 D2 + 0

D1 = 30 and D2 = 30

Mass balance on A:  100(0.5) = 30(0.5) + 30(0.17) + 10XA + 30(0.7)

XA D3 = 0.89
XB D3 = 1 - 0.89 = 0.11

to get the flowrate and composition of stream E, , do a mean mass balance on unit 3

total: 30 +E = 10 + 30 ====> E = 10Kg

A: 30 XA p2 + 10 XA E = 10(0.89) + 30(0.7) = 29.9
B: 30 XB p2 + 10 XB E = 10(0.11) + 30(0.3) = 10.1

These two equation are not independent.

XA p2  + XB p2 = 1
XA p2 = 4 x XB p2  =======> XB p2 = 0.2
XA p2 = 1- XB p2 = 0.8

using either the A or B balance on unit 3, we obtain:

XA E = 0.59 ----> 59% A
XB E = 0.41-----> 41% B
