The lifestyle for the out-of-town visitor to a casino resort is one of difference. The location is different: it's a place far from home. The restaurants and food are different: many unique eateries instead of eating at home. The clothing worn is different: the daily business outfit is set aside. On top of this, the community is oriented toward providing for this customer.

Often, from the outside the casino resort building has a look and feel of excitement and difference. American gaming communities such as Las Vegas have structures that are distinctive and larger-than-life. The casino itself is often a large building decorated with vivid colors, dramatic images, and symbols to stand out from its surroundings. An example of this is Excalibur, which is built in the shape of a castle, complete with turrets and drawbridges, a large stone-block exterior, and pennants flapping from flagpoles. Visitors expect that they will have experiences that are unique. They know what they do and see will be different from daily routines back home, and that new memories will certainly be created.

The out of town visitor often shifts into lifestyle behaviors that match the sense of expectations created by the casinos. People begin to take more risks than they normally would. They gamble. They attend shows and other entertainment. They stay up late into the night, and frequently sleep later the next morning. They frequently eat more food than usual, drink more alcohol, and often sample menu selections well outside of their normal diets.

Personal image becomes much more important for many visitors. With so much money being gambled, or spent on fine dining and hotels, many out of town visitors want to convey a sense of success and wealth. They want to be viewed as someone who can easily afford to place big bets. They want others  both other gamblers and casino workers  to view themselves as special, important and attractive; people to want to be around and to notice. It becomes an atmosphere where image is everything; of having a station in life that means you belong in the casino resort environment; of being a Very Important Person (VIP).

The casino resort offers customers an experience across several dimensions of life. Customers can sleep overnight in the hotel, actually living at the resort. They can eat meals in the restaurants. They can attend shows, relax in the lounges with drinks, swim at the pool, or casually wander the retail shopping choices. Of course, customers can spend time at virtually any hour of the day or night in the casino, engaging in the excitement by placing bets at slots or table games, or sharing it with friends by helping them to gamble, too. The casino resort experience is one that is available to customers for as little time or as much time as the customer wishes.

The average length of stay at Las Vegas casino resorts is three and a half days. During the 1990s, this market had positioned itself as a family destination on par with Disneyworld. Families were encouraged to bring children, grandparents, etc. There were activities for all ages, including day care facilities for the very young, video game arcades for teens, and of course 24-hour casinos for adults. The entertainment offered risqu shows for adults and more G rated shows for families such as Cirque de Soleil or Siegfried and Roy.

Las Vegas has changed this orientation in the new century to another theme: What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas. This message tells customers that they are an adult destination, where partying, celebrating and gambling were to be unfettered experiences, and anyone's behavior would remain secrets that stayed in Vegas. While many of the activities for children disappeared, families

were continued to be welcome. The concept of a family lifestyle event has shifted to one of primarily an adult locale where privacy would be protected.
