Gender-inclusive language is language that does not discriminate against men or women.
Unfortunately, the English language is structured with an inherent bias toward men. For example,
there are no gender-neutral pronouns in the English language. Our goal therefore should be to use
gender-inclusive language. Ways to do this include: (1 ) commit to removing sexism from your
language; (2 ) practice and reinforce gender neutral communication patterns; (3 ) practice unfamiliar
gender neutral idioms (i.e., police officer) until they become natural; (4 ) take care to not cause
negative reactions from your listener because of awkward use of gender neutral language; (5 ) check
the root meaning of words; and (6 ) carefully monitor your outgoing communication to ensure that it is
not sexist.
