First, a speaker can ask a question. This can be a rhetorical question (How many of you would rather be home watching the football game?) or a legitimate question (How many of you are alumni?). A second way to establish a motive for listening is to engage the audience by using an anecdote, startling statistic, or another attention-getting strategy to start off the speech. Finally, a speaker can relate to the audience by telling the listeners explicitly how the information in the speech will relate to them.
