I'm doing a class experiment to determine if freezing seeds before planting them affects germination? I know that in Canada, apple seeds HAVE to be below a certain temperature before they can germinate but I can't work out why (google's not much help either). If anyone could help me out or tell me what the process of freezing seeds before planting them is called, I'd really appreciate it Slight Smile

Yes it does, but not in a negative way.
It fools the seed into thinking it's wintertime, when most seeds would get frozen by the weather while in the ground.
When defrosted and planted they will grow as normal.

This process is called cold hardening. It is of two types i.e step wise and gradual process. when
temprature would be suitable seeds can germinate.
