When using the Z-track technique, the nurse should use the side of the hand to pull the tissue laterally about 1 in. (2.5 cm) until the tissue is taut. The needle is depressed with the thumb, not the finger, and the needle should be left in place for several seconds following injection. Massage is contraindicated.
