WTE is an acronym for waste-to-energy. It is a method of combusting waste in incinerators to create steam that fuels heating systems or drives electricity generation. Waste can generate approximately 35% of the energy generated by burning coal. Roughly 100 WTE facilities operate in the United States and a few operate in Canada.
