1) A mechanism that stops interbreeding by preventing the formation of a zygote. 

2) Reproductive isolating mechanisms which prevent the formation of a zygote between members of different species. These mechanisms include geographical isolation, ecological isolation, temporal isolation, behavioral isolation, mechanical isolation, and gametic isolation.
