In the study of industrial location, a term used to refer to two types of business enterprise, fundamentally different from one another: large, organically complex center firms and small, simply structured periphery firms. In the study of development, the term is used to refer to two types of social and economic systems existing simultaneously within the same territory: one system modern, the other traditional.
