1) A junction where a nerve terminal meets a target neuron, muscle cell, or gland and can communicate with other cells.

2) The synapse is the junction where the axon of a sending neuron communicates with a receiving neuron across the synaptic cleft. The sending neuron releases neurotransmitters into the synapse as part of the process of communicating with the receiving neuron.

3) Is the junction between neurons or between a neuron and an effector.
