In vertebrates, a gland that plays a major role in relaying sensory information to appropriate parts of the cerebrum and, in turn, sending outputs from the cerebrum to other parts of the brain. It receives input from all sensory systems and is involved in the perception of pain and the degree of mental arousal in the cortex.
