A three-stage process that includes (1) dilation and thinning of the cervix to allow passage of the fetus out of the uterus; (2) the movement of the fetus through the cervix and the vagina and out into the world; and (3) the contraction of blood vessels within the placenta and umbilical cord, blocking further blood flow, making the newborn independent from the mother; the placenta detaches from the uterine wall and is delivered a few minutes after the birth of the baby.
