In chemistry, cracking is the process of breaking down chemical compounds at high temperature. The term is applied particularly to the cracking of hydrocarbons in the kerosene fraction obtained from petroleum refining to give smaller hydrocarbons. This process involves the decomposition of petroleum fractions into hydrocarbons of lower molecular weight, by heating them under pressure in the presence of a suitable Catalyst.
