A communication device used to connect a computer to a telephone line, modems are most often used for dial-up Internet access. Modem is short for modulator-demodulator. A modem modulates digital data into an analog signal that can be transmitted over a phone line, and on the receiving end, demodulates the analog signal back into a digital data.
