Byzantine style (6th through mid-15th centuries) in architecture follows a fairly typical form consisting of a central dome with a grouping of three apses at the East end. The entire space describes a cross-in-square layout. Byzantine style in two-dimensional art reflects a diversity of approaches. Most commonly, it reflects the hieratic style (typically mosaics and manuscript illuminations). The word hieratic means “holy” or “sacred” and exhibits formal, almost rigid figures designed to inspire reverence and meditation and reflects a strict canon, whereby the human body measures nine heads in height (seven heads gives a lifelike proportion).
