Primary structures (late 20th century) is a movement in sculpture that pursues two major goals: extreme simplicity of shapes and a kinship with architecture. A space-time relationship distinguishes primary structures from other sculpture. Viewers are invited to share an experience in three-dimensional space in which they can walk around and/or through the works. Form and content are reduced to their most “minimal” qualities.
