1) Narcolepsy is a neurological disorder that causes excessive daytime sleepiness and fragmented nighttime sleep. Symptoms can also include sleep paralysis, hypnagogic/hypnopompic hallucinations, and 'cataplexy,' a sudden loss of muscle tone (paralysis), often brought on by strong emotion such as amusement or surprise.

2) Narcolepsy occurs when individuals unpredictably fall into REM sleep; it can be dangerous for driving as it is difficult to predict the onset of these "attacks."
