1) Nonliving proteinaceous infectious agents that cause a group of rare, fatal brain diseases affecting humans and other mammals. 2) Prions are proteins that can assume (after infection or by other causes) a new protein structure, which is self-propagating. The disease has several variants, and at least one is fatal to humans.
