The injection into the body of small quantities of living or dead microbes, small quantities of toxins, or harmless antigenic molecules derived from a microorganism or its toxin, resulting in a primary immune response including the production of memory cells. Subsequent natural exposure to the immunizing antigen results in a response that can prevent or reduce the severity of disease.
