Definition for Solifluction

From Biology Forums Dictionary

1) 'The slow movement of tundra soils down slopes as a result of annual freezing and thawing of surface soil and the actions of water and gravity.

2) Solifluction is a form of creep occurring on slopes underlain by permafrost. The active layer at the top of the permafrost thaws in summer and the meltwater (and additions of rainwater) saturate the space between soil particles. The material sags downhill very slowly at rates of a few centimeters per year. The prominent effect on the landscape is a series of arcuate lobes which can appear many meters from where the soil material originally detached.
