Definition for Redundancy hypothesis

An extension of the rivet hypothesis. In this model, also called the passenger hypothesis, most species are more like passengers on a plane - they take up space but do not add to the airworthiness. The species are said to be redundant because they could simply be eliminated or replaced by others with no loss in function.
