Plant shoots have a modular organization.

Description
(a) The top end of an herbaceous stem showing the shoot modules. Each module consists of a node with its associated leaf and axillary meristem or bud and an internode. (b) The modular organization shown by a woody stem as it appears during winter. Axillary buds lie above the scars left by leaf fall. Regions between successive sets of bud scale scars mark each year's growth.
