When a muscle is stimulated motor units are recruited according to size (smallest to largest) in response to task at hand. Ex: Tossing a pair of keys to another person would not require much strength as throwing a 20 lb weight. If motor units were not recruited according to size every muscle contraction would be full force no matter the task.
