She says we can avoid overspending by:

1) controlling desire by gaining knowledge of the process of consumption and it's effect on people

2) helping to make it exclusively "uncool" by the mystifying the belief that people are "better" simply because they own excessively expensive items

3) discouraging competitive consumption by encouraging our friends and acquaintances to spend less on presents and other purchases

4) become educated consumers and a boy use of shopping as a form of therapy
