Your friend Joanie, who knows little about science, is reading a magazine article about a patient who had an aneurysm at the base of the brain that suddenly grew much larger. The surgeons’ first goal was to “keep it from rupturing,” and the second goal was to “relieve pressure on the brain stem and cranial nerves.” The surgeons were able to “replace the aneurysm with a section of plastic tubing,” so the patient recovered. Joanie asks you what all this means. (Hint: Check

A balloon like bulging of the wall of an artery which might cause rurpturing of an artery, very often reveals that the artery is gradually becoming weak due to chronic hypertension or arteriosclerosis. The most common sites or area where aneurysm occurs are the abdominal aorta and the arteries which enter the brain and kidneys.  The above mentioned patient has cerebral aneurysm which means aneurysm of the brain. A cerebral or brain aneurysm is a cerebrovascular disorder in which wall of the cerebral artery or vein becomes weak. This results in a localized dilation or bulging of the blood vessel.

A minor, static aneurysm produces very less symptoms and it may also be asymptomatic. Before the rupturing of the larger aneurysm, the person may experience symptoms such as an unexpected and abnormally severe headache, nausea, loss of vision, vomiting, and even loss of consciousness. Rupturing or bursting of a cerebral aneurysm is very risky and it might result in bleeding into the meninges or the brain itself. Thus the first goal of surgeon is to prevent rupturing of the aneurysm, then to decrease the pressure on the brain stem and cranial nerves and finally to replace aneurysm with a section of plastic tubing.
