a) Find P(1<x<5)

b)P(x<3 or x >4)

(Part B is supposed to say: P x is less than 3 or x is greater than or equal to 4)

Answer:

Since the probabilities mentioned above do not overlap (ie one student cannot have both 0 and 1 book), you can simply add the probabilities.
For a)
P(1<x<5) = P(x=1) + P(x=2) + P(x=3) + P(x=4) + P(x=5)
= .25 + .20 + .15 + .10 + .10
= .80
For b)
P(x<3) = P(x=0) + P(x=1) + P(x=2)
= .20 + .25 + .20
= .65
P(x>=4) = 1 - P(x<3)
= 1 - .65
= .35
