Definition for Acid precipitation

Precipitation with a pH of less than 5.6; acid rain results from the burning of fossil fuels, which releases sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide into the atmosphere, which in turn react with oxygen in the air to form sulphuric acid and nitric acid. These fall to the surface in rain or snow.
