Primary biliary disease is a defined as immunogenic disease of the intrahepatic bile ducts.
Secondary biliary cirrhosis occurs with prolonged obstruction from mechanical causes, sclerosing cholangitis, and diseases that promote cholestasis, such as biliary atresia and cystic fibrosis.
