Definition for Bottleneck

A type of genetic drift which occurs by chance alone. In this effect, alleles may be lost from a population when the population is drastically reduced. This reduction may be caused by a natural disaster, habitat loss, poaching, disease, etc. A bottleneck effect reduces diversity within a population.
