Definition for Candidiasis

From Biology Forums Dictionary

Candidiasis describes any of a variety of opportunistic yeast infections and diseases caused by various species of the genus Candida. Vaginal candidiasis manifests as white mucoid colonies growing on the mucous membrane of the vagina and the skin covering the labia. The yeast produces burning and itching, and intercourse can be painful. The discharge is often curdlike and slight. Candida albicans is the most common species causing candidiasis. It forms long cellular extensions called pseudohyphae. Treatment is with antifungal agents. Because antibacterial agents suppress microbial antagonism, allowing C. albicans to flourish, unnecessary use of antibacterial drugs is discouraged.
