A disease caused by insufficient levels of thyroid hormone in the fetus; axons fail to become wrapped with myelin during fetal life, which leads to slow conduction speeds and abnormal connections between brain neurons. This results in profound mental defects that cannot be reversed unless treatment begins immediately after birth.
