A glycolytic intermediate, dihdroxyacetone phosphate (DHAP, also called glycerone phosphate) is a three carbon compound produced from the cleavage of the six carbon phosphosugar fructose 1,6 bisphosphate by the enzyme aldolase. DHAP also can arise from the action of the enzyme triose phosphate isomerase, which interconverts DHAP and D-glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate. Reduction of DHAP to glycerol 3-phosphate provides a starting point for synthesis of phospholipids.
