1) a visual effect in which one image seems to blend into the next. A dissolve is made by superimposing a fade-out over a fade-in.
2) The end of one shot merges slowly into the beginning of the next; as the second shot becomes increasingly distinct, the first slowly disappears. Traditional way of moving from sequence to sequence.
