Definition for Glucose 1-phosphate
From Biology Forums Dictionary
An intermediate in glycogen metabolism, glucose 1-phosphate (G1P) is a phosphate ester of glucose. G1P is formed directly from glycogen by the enzyme glycogen phophorylase. G1P is subsequently converted by the enzyme phosphoglucomutase [EC 5.4.2.2] to glucose 6-phosphate. Glucose 1-phosphate, glucose 6-phosphate, and fructose 6-phosphate are all phosphate esters fairly close in free energy, and hence readily interconvertible, depending on metabolic demand, and are thus considered to be members of a hexose monophosphate pool. In the synthesis of glycogen, glucose 1-phosphate is converted to UDP-glucose, a form that is activated for synthesis of glycosidic linkages. This reaction uses UTP and is catalyzed by glucose 1-phosphate uridylyltransferase.
