Definition for Greenhouse effect

From Biology Forums Dictionary

1) The process in which short-wave solar radiation passes through the atmosphere to warm Earth but is radiated back to space as long-wave infrared radiation. Much of this radiation is absorbed by atmospheric gases and reradiated back to Earth's surface, causing its temperature to rise.

2) The warming of the atmosphere due to increased amounts of carbon dioxide, nitrous oxides, methane, and chloroflourocarbons.

3) Some energy travels back downward, warming the troposphere and the planet’s surface.
