The process by which a leaf drops after the formation of an abscission zone at the point where a leaf petiole connects with the stem. The abscission zone consists of an inner protective layer of cork cells whose tough walls help to prevent pathogen attack and dehydration, and an outer layer of cells having thin walls that break easily.
