Definition for Metaphysics

From Biology Forums Dictionary

A subfield of philosophy which treats first principles. Typical metaphysical questions involve the existence of a deity, the nature of causality, and the mind/body problem. The word itself is sometimes said to derive from a mere accident, in which the text of Aristotle’s (untitled) treatise on First Philosophy was randomly bound after (‘meta’ in Greek) the volume entitled “Physics” in an early edition of the Philosopher’s works.
