Definition for Multiple sclerosis (MS)

A disease in which a person's own body, for reasons that are unknown, attacks and destroys myelin as if it were a foreign substance. Eventually, these repeated attacks leave scarred (sclerotic) areas of tissue in the nervous system and impair the function of myelinated neurons that control movement, speech, memory, and emotion.
