A short, linear chain of amino acids, linked by peptide bonds. A peptide is usually distinguished from a protein simply as a matter of size, or (somewhat equivalently) being routinely producible by common solid-phase synthetic methods. The roughly synonymous term polypeptide is often used to denote peptides or proteins. Many hormones, such as insulin and glucagon are peptides.
