Definition for Realism

From Biology Forums Dictionary

Realism in painting (19th century) sought to make an objective and unprejudiced record of the customs, ideas, and appearances of contemporary society. By selectively choosing details, realism in painting sought to go beyond the obvious to a deeper sense of reality. This was done through spontaneity, harmonious colors, subjects from everyday life, and faithfulness to observed lighting and atmospheric effects. Realism in the theatre (mid-19th century) sought a truthful portrayal of the world. Objectivity was stressed, and knowledge of the real world was seen as possible only through direct observation (similar to painting). Thus, everyday life, with which the playwright was directly familiar, became the subject matter of dramas. The focus was on human motives and experience.
