Definition for Twelve-tone
From Biology Forums Dictionary
Invented by Schoenberg in the 1920s, twelve-tone music (mid-20th century) is characterized by the abandonment of tonality in favor of a twelve-tone approach. Perhaps more a compositional system than a style, it is a method of composing in which all pitches of a composition are derived from a special ordering of the twelve chromatic tones (tone row or set).
