A three-base sequence—usually AUG—that specifies the first amino acid in a polypeptide.

The codon AUG in mRNA, at which polypeptide synthesis is started. It is recognized by formylmethionyl tRNA in bacteria and by methionyl tRNA in eukaryotes.
