A type of caustic precipitation (rain, snow, or fog) that derives from the combustion of coal and other fossil fuels (such as from motor vehicles), releasing sulfur and nitrogen oxides that react chemically with water in the earth's atmosphere to produce a weak acid that is dangerous to plants, animals, and the built environment.
