A reagent used to detect and quantify amino acids and peptides, as in the products of hydrolysis. A complex reaction with amino groups, involving oxidative deamination, ultimately produces an intensely purple-colored product (absorbance max @570nm), except in the case of proline, which leads to a yellow product (absorbance max @440nm).
