The Yoruba people have been known throughout history as prolific carvers.
Olowe of Ise (c.1873–1938) was one of the most important Yoruba artists of the early twentieth century.

He was a royal court carver. One of most well-known pieces is the figural column sequence of the king’s palace at Ikere.
