SlideshowReport

The process of exon shuffling.

Description
In this example, a segment of one gene containing an exon and the flanking introns has been inserted into another gene. A rare, abnormal crossing-over event called nonhomologous recombination can cause this to happen. This results in proteins that have new combinations of domains and possibly new combinations of functions.
